A Legacy of Missouri Automotive Dominance Bommarito Automotive Group stands as the preeminent force in the Missouri automotive retail landscape. Founded on the principles of hard work and community integration, the organization has evolved from a single Oldsmobile point in Ellisville into a diversified powerhouse with over 20 franchise locations. As a privately held, family-owned enterprise, Bommarito has successfully navigated decades of industry volatility to claim the title of Missouri's number one auto dealer, consistently ranking within the top 50 nationally out of more than 17,000 franchised dealerships. The group's trajectory is a case study in strategic regional concentration. While many Tier-1 dealer groups seek rapid interstate expansion, Bommarito has focused on deepening its market share within the St. Louis metropolitan area. This concentrated footprint allows for high operational efficiency in logistics, marketing, and multi-rooftop governance, ensuring that the brand remains synonymous with the local community. ## The Founding Story: From Car Jockey to Industry Captain The Bommarito story began in 1952 when Frank Bommarito, a Navy veteran and former boxer, entered the industry as a car jockey and washer at a local General Motors dealership. His ascent through the ranks was rapid, serving in various sales and management capacities at McMahon Pontiac and Vincel Pontiac. These early years provided Frank with a granular understanding of the retail ecosystem, from service bay operations to the nuances of high-volume sales. In 1971, Frank Bommarito realized his vision by opening his first franchise, an Oldsmobile dealership in Ellisville, Missouri. At a time when the domestic market was undergoing significant shifts, the Ellisville location flourished, eventually becoming the largest Oldsmobile dealer in the state and a top ten performer nationally. This early success with General Motors brands, including Cadillac and GMC, established the foundation for what would become a multi-billion dollar enterprise. ## Leadership Transition and Modern Expansion In 1998, leadership of the group transitioned to John J. Bommarito, Frank’s son. John had already proven his operational prowess in 1992 after taking over a struggling Oldsmobile-Cadillac-Mazda dealership in St. Peters, Missouri, and successfully turning it into a profitable high-volume point. Under John’s tenure as President, the group underwent its most significant period of diversification. John Bommarito’s strategy shifted the group toward a balanced portfolio of domestic and import brands. This diversification was critical during the late 2000s when domestic brands faced severe headwinds. By integrating Nissan, Honda, and Volkswagen into the fold, the group insulated itself from brand-specific downturns while capturing a broader demographic of the St. Louis car-buying public. Despite the passing of Frank Bommarito in 2023, the org...
